Commercial Driver’s License – Course Description

Career Transitions provides one-on-one truck driving training to fit your schedule!
Students will learn the hands-on skills to pass the Class A – Commercial Driver’s License.
The CDL program teaches the student how to safely maneuver and drive a 13 speed truck with a 48’ trailer.

  • Pre-trip inspections of the truck are taught thoroughly.
  • Log books are kept by the student and teacher accounting for hours of service.
  • Students learn all aspects of safely inspecting, driving and parking the tractor-trailer.
  • Students especially practice the skills of shifting gears, backing into a dock and making a 90 degree angle turn.
  • Practice time is spent in traffic on the highways and side roads.
  • Students will practice the key skills in order to pass the DMV pre-trip and drive tests.

Qualifications: Students qualify for the program by holding a current Montana driver’s license, passing the Department of Transportation physical exam and passing a written test to obtain the CLP / Learner’s Permit with the Department of Motor Vehicles. After training registration, students are required to take a drug test prior to instruction.

Career Transitions’ truck & trailer is used for instruction is also used to take the driving test with the DMV Examiner. Upon completion of the class and successfully obtaining a Class A – CDL, the student receives a certificate of completion from Career Transitions and their CDL from the State of Montana. Career Transitions staff will advise students in creating an effective resume and finding job placement. Additional endorsements can be achieved through written tests such as tanker, doubles & triples and Hazmat.

For the CDL Program, the student provides a current Montana Driver’s License (Class B or D), a DOT physical card (Medical Examiner’s Card) and Learners Permit (CLP). For the Refresher program the student provides a current CDL. Career Transitions provides the drug test, pre-trip & driving instruction, test review and drive test when applicable.

19-hour COMPREHENSIVE CDL PROGRAM  $2,800

  • Drug Test, Pre-Trip Inspection Instruction (2 hours)
  • Driving Instruction & Practice (14 hours with driving instructor)
  • Test Review with Instructor (3 hours)
  • Drive Test using tractor/trailer with instructor

 14-hour CDL PROGRAM for Experienced Drivers  $2,100

  • Drug Test, Pre-Trip Inspection Instruction (2 hours)
  • Driving Instruction (12 hours with driving instructor)
  • No Test Review
  • Drive Test using tractor/trailer with instructor

8-hour CDL PROGRAM for Experienced Drivers  $1,200

  • Drug Test, Pre-Trip Inspection Instruction (2 hours)
  • Driving Instruction (6 hours with driving instructor)
  • No Test Review
  • Drive Test using tractor/trailer with instructor

3-hour REFRESHER PROGRAM for Experienced Drivers with Current CDL  $500

  • Drug Test and Driving Instruction (3 hours) No Drive Test

ADDITIONAL HOURS PROGRAM for Enrolled Students  $165/hour

  • Continued Driving Instruction with driving instructor after initial training
  • Hours are determined by the student, instructor and education coordinator

 RE-TEST for Enrolled Students  $330

  • Driving Exam at Bozeman fairgrounds using tractor/trailer with CT instructor

DRIVING TEST for Non-Students  $480

  • Drug Test and Driving Exam at Bozeman fairgrounds using tractor/trailer with CT instructor

HELENA DRIVE TEST for Enrolled Students  $400

  • Additional Charge for Drive Test in Helena with CT driving instructor & CT truck
